Everything is wrapped, carted off and legally disposed of at a licensed facility such as Townsville's Stuart Waste Facility, with a clearance certificate where required.

Asbestos waste in Townsville must be securely prepared and taken only to an authorised facility. The local option is Stuart Waste Facility at 24 Vantassel Street, Stuart QLD 4811; regulated waste hours are 7:30am to 3:00pm.

The facility is open 6:30am to 5:45pm daily (closed Good Friday and Christmas Day). Council advises phoning Resource Recovery on 13 48 10 before bringing a large load. The relevant disposal framework is Queensland's Environmental Protection Regulation 2019.

Disposal starts at the work area, not at the gate. Keep material intact where possible and plan the wrapping, loading and covered transport before it is moved. Waste that is not prepared correctly can create avoidable dust and may not be suitable for the facility’s regulated waste process.

Review our disposal cost guide before planning a load. If you are considering doing removal yourself, read the Queensland DIY removal rules; for a common small-job scope, see asbestos fence removal.

Facility fees and preparation

Small load, up to 50 kg$14.80 inc GST
Medium load, up to 250 kg$34.10 inc GST
Large load, up to 400 kg$47.70 inc GST
Over 400 kgWeighed and charged per tonne at the weighbridge

Asbestos waste must be double wrapped or double bagged, labelled, and kept damp so no dust escapes during transport, then disposed of only at an authorised facility. Use heavy-duty plastic of at least 0.2 mm, seal seams with strong tape, fill bags only half full so they can be sealed properly, and transport them in a covered and secured vehicle.
