After storm damage, treat broken or displaced sheeting from a pre-1990 building as suspected asbestos until it is assessed. Keep people away, do not sweep, vacuum, cut or crush debris, and use an authorised disposal path rather than general waste. The first objective is to avoid turning damaged material into a wider cleanup problem.
Townsville conditions can create different asbestos hazards: cyclone winds can scatter fragments, flooding can weaken saturated fibro, and fire can make asbestos cement friable. Read our dedicated guides for cyclone damage, flood damage and fire damage.
Practical safety checklist for debris
- •Do not enter a fire, flood or storm damaged property until emergency services or Council say it is safe.
- •Assume any pre-1990 building contains asbestos in its sheeting, roof, eaves, flues and floor underlays.
- •If you must be on site, wear a P2 mask, disposable coveralls, gloves and sturdy boots.
- •Keep debris damp with a fine mist and never use a high-pressure hose.
- •Never dry sweep, never use a household vacuum, never use power tools.
- •Keep children and pets away entirely.
Match the response to the damage
Cyclone Debbie, March 2017: Queensland Government advice during the clean-up was that if you have damaged material that may contain asbestos you should cover it with a tarp or similar and contact your local council for advice and assistance. Never break or crush the sheeting. Disaster kerbside collection in Townsville separates waste into four piles: metal, green waste, asbestos and general. Asbestos must never go in the general pile.
If heat has affected asbestos cement, remember that it should be treated as friable. If water has soaked fibro, its integrity may be reduced. Assessment first helps establish the removal and disposal pathway before other cleanup work begins. We can provide a free on-site quote for the work required.
